YEARS OF HISTORY
The RCNS was constituted on June 8th, 1951, by a group of regular summer visitors passionate about sailing and marine sports. Their idea was to have a suitable venue to meet up and to promote all the tourism and sports opportunities offered by the Pontevedra estuary.
Since it was founded, the RCNS has worked hard to become a benchmark of the national sailing. Thus, during his almost 70 years of history it has been in charge of organizing regattas and national and international sporting events.
In 1968 it hosted its first Vaurien Galician Championship and the test event for the Speed Boating Spanish Championship. It was the starting point as organizer of sporting events that includes several world championships of different sailing classes, as host port for the Vuelta a España [Round Spain race] on board world-class IMOCA Open 60, back in 2010, and as the headquarters of relevant international regattas, like the 2005 Volvo Ocean Race.
Although it was already a few years before, practically coinciding with the appointment of Mr Pedro Campos as president -a position he continues to hold today- when the RCNS began to be known and frequented by the best international sailors.
With the Pontevedra estuary as the gateway to the second largest ocean in the world, Sanxenxo is an ideal base for any team whose objective is to compete in a round the world sailing race. Likewise, the construction of the Juan Carlos I marina in 1998 was key for this town and the RCNS to host the first ocean sailing teams that trained there for months, such as the German Illbruck Challenge skippered by John Kostecki and Amer Sports One skippered by the New Zealander Grant Dalton. Both prepared here for the 2001-2002 Volvo Ocean Race and finished in first and third position, respectively.
From there on, up to eight round the world boats have represented the RCNS in five editions of the Volvo Ocean Race and two of the Barcelona World Race.
2005: New Headquarters
Together with the experience of the RCNS as an events organizer, we have to mention its exceptional facilities.
In 2005, the RCNS inaugurated its new headquarters with the presence of H.M. King Juan Carlos I. All the yacht club’s members were invited to this massive event that was attended by several personalities, such as the President of the Galician Government at that time, Emilio Pérez Touriño.
This work that allowed the RCNS to now have fully equipped and modernized facilities, that include an outdoor swimming pool, a social lounge, restaurant, terraces with stunning views to the Pontevedra estuary, gym and nursery.
In addition, since August 2014, the RCNS has its own moorings: 62 moorings up to 12-meters long with all kinds of amenities such as water, electricity, surveillance and Wi-Fi.
