For the first time in history the same waters will host the Europeans and Worlds in consecutive years.

The ‘Cidade da Cultura’ [City of Culture], in Santiago de Compostela, has been the site of a presentation of two major international sailing events which Galicia will host in the next years. The 2020 6mR European Championship and the 2021 6mR World Championship which will be held in Sanxenxo waters. For the first time in history, the same venue will host both Six Metre championships in successive years.

The event has been attended by HM King Juan Carlos I; HRH Infanta Elena; the president of the Galician Government, Alberto Núñez Feijóo; the Secretary of State for Sports, Mª José Rienda; the regional Minister for Culture and Tourism, Román Rodríguez; the Secretary General for Sports of the Xunta de Galicia, Marta Míguez; the mayor of Sanxenxo, Telmo Martín; and Pedro Campos, president of the RCNS [Royal Yacht Club of Sanxenxo], in addition to many other personalities and Galician sailors of the 6 Metre class.

A strong candidacy supported by the ISMA
Sanxenxo presented its candidacy last April during the ISMA Spring Meeting, meeting of the ISMA that was held for the first time in Spain and attended by representatives of countries such as United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, United States, Finland, Sweden, Portugal and France.

Five months later, at the annual assembly of the ISMA held in La Trinité Sur Mer (France), it was revealed that the Galician town of Sanxenxo had won the candidacy although it was today when it has become official.

While the dates of both the 2020 Europeans and the 2021 Worlds are yet to be determined the President of the RCNS, Pedro Campos, has said that they will certainly not happen “in July nor August,” the busiest part of the summer season in Sanxenxo.”

These two events will be reinforced with the regattas that will begin in 2019. “For the coming three years, and we are already setting dates, we will sail from March to November at least once a month, which gives a total of about 29 championships in addition to the European and the World Cup,” he added.
